Presents.....

The idea for this was born, if memory serves me correctly, in January 1983. Those present included: Coach James, Coach McDermott, Coach Donnelly, the Legendary Larry "Hector" McDonald, Bill King, and the Dagle brothers. We were in the Cove Restaurant after a thrilling victory over Haverhill High School. Coach McDermott suggested an alumni newsletter which was to be called the "Friends of Billerica Basketball." The idea never really got off the ground, but it did not die. Fast forward 25 years later and with advent of new technology we present the "newsletter", Enjoy!
To many "tumbleweeds" (those who moved to Billerica circa late 1980s or 1990s) the name Ed James means nothing. However, to us townies/alumni his name has many positive connotations. One quick story involves another BMHS Hall of Fame coach, George Gracie. When George Gracie introduced Coach James introduced Coach James for his induction into the Howe/BMHS Hall of Fame he told the following story.
George was driving home one night through Billerica Center and he saw Coach James sitting on a bench reading the newspaper. George pulled over and asked, "what the hell are you doing here?" Coach James informed him that he'd lent his car to some BMHS student so he could drive to his college interview. Coach James had found out this kid's parents could not leave work early to help him get there. Upon hearing of his dilemma Coach James approached him and tossed him the keys to his car and wished him good luck with the college interview. In today's educational world such an act is expressly forbidden, but that was a much different era. Stories of Coach James' giving, unselfishness, and caring for Billerica kids could fill volumes.
Coach James worked and coached at BMHS from 1964 to 1989. Before him was George Gracie and before George was Natale "Nat" Federico. Coach Federico brought Billerica its first league championship in 1952 (we were Howe High School then.) The 1952 team had four Hall of Famers on it: Jack Fay, Billy Robbins, Dick Myles and Fred Glavine. We'll save the history for a little bit later. But the point of all of this is to show that Howe/BMHS basketball goes much further back than the late 1980s or 90s. And there were several championships in there too.
So with a nod to the past and a look to the future this website is dedicated to the many alumni of Howe High School and BMHS. And to Coach James. Enjoy!
